INGREDIENTS:
- 2 eggs
- 1⁄2 cup canned pumpkin
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons dry milk
- 2 1⁄2 cups flour (wheat is probably better!)
- water
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Blend eggs and pumpkin together; add salt, dry milk, and flour.
- Add water as needed to make the dough somewhat workable.
- The dough should be dry and stiff, don't be concerned with crumbs being left in the bowl.
- You will need to mix this with your hands because it is too stiff for an electric mixer.
- Roll to 1/2-inch thick.
- Cut into shapes.
- Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake for 20 minutes on one side, then turn over and bake another 20 minutes.
YIELD: Makes about 5 dozen biscuits
ACTIVE TIME: 40 min
TOTAL TIME: 9 1/4 hr
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/4 cups whole-wheat flour
- 1 1/4 cups cornmeal
- 1 1/4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) cold unsalted butter, cut into tablespoon pieces
- 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon water
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint leaves
- 1 large egg
- Special equipment: a pastry or bench scraper; a dog-biscuit cookie cutter*
- Pulse flours, cornmeal, oats, wheat germ, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt in a food processor until combined. Add butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal with pea-size butter lumps. Add 1 cup water and pulse until a coarse, dense dough forms.
- Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead in parsley and mint until well distributed. Gather, then halve dough with scraper. Form into 2 balls and flatten each into a 6-inch disk.
- Put oven racks in upper and lower thirds of oven and preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 2 large baking sheets.
- Roll out 1 disk of dough into a round (1/3 inch thick) on a well-floured surface with a well-floured rolling pin. (If dough becomes too soft to roll out, wrap in plastic and chill until firm.) Cut out as many biscuits as possible and arrange about 1/4 inch apart on 1 baking sheet.
- Gather scraps and reroll, then cut out more biscuits. Repeat with remaining dough, using other baking sheet.
- Whisk together egg and 1 tablespoon water. Brush biscuits with egg wash and bake, switching position of sheets halfway through, until tops are golden brown, about 35 minutes total. Turn off oven and dry biscuits in oven overnight.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (255g) natural creamy peanut butter
- 3/4 cup (180ml) nonfat milk
- 1 large egg (or 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce)
- 2 cups (244g) whole wheat flour*
- 1 Tablespoon baking powder
- 1/3 cup (30g) oats (either whole-rolled or quick oats are fine)
- 2-3 strips bacon, chopped
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 325F degrees. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, gently mix the peanut butter, milk, and egg together with a large spoon or spatula. Switch to a whisk to make sure no lumps remain. Add the flour and baking powder. You may need to turn the dough out onto the counter and use your hands to work in the flour. Mix in the oats and chopped bacon. The dough is extremely thick and heavy.
- Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into 1/4" thickness. Cut into shapes using cookie cutters or a knife. Arrange on the baking sheets. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until very lightly browned on the bottom. Remove from the oven, and flip the treats to bake the other side for 10-12 more minutes.
- Allow to cool completely before serving to your pup. Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Treats freeze well, up to 2 months.
