Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups (187g) self-rising flour (Plus extra for rolling)
  • 1 cup (237ml) buttermilk
  • 6 tbsp. (77g) shortening
  • 1 tbsp. (10.7g) baking powder
  • 1 tbsp. (12.5g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp. (15ml) melted butter
Method:
  • Measure the self-rising flour, sugar and baking powder.
  • Mix well with a whisk or sift it together.
  • Cut up the shortening and add it to the dry ingredients. Some recipes recommend that you use lard in place of vegetable shortening.
  • Use two butter knives or a pastry cutter to cut the shortening into the biscuit mix.
  • Slowly add your buttermilk to the mix while you cut in the shortening. It should be an even consistency; however, avoid overworking the dough or the biscuits may be too tough.
  • Flour a pastry cloth or a kitchen counter. Knead the biscuit dough into the flour
  • Roll the dough out into a one-inch disc with your rolling pin. Cut the dough with a round cookie cutter or biscuit cutter.
  • Now Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (232 Celsius).
  • Butter a cast iron skillet.
  • Place the biscuits inside the buttered skillet. Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter. Bake for 15 minutes or until brown on top.

Ingredients:

  • 5 c self rising flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 c oil
  • 2 c buttermilk
  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/4 c warm water
Directions: Step-By-Step
  • 1 Dissolve yeast in warm water with sugar.
  • 2 Mix all other ingredients together and add to yeast mixture.
  • 3 Mix well in large bowl; cover and let set in refrigerator overnight.
  • 4 Remove required amount from refrigerator and pat or roll out on floured surface.
  • 5 Cut out with a biscuit cutter (or a round glass dipped in flour) and place on greased baking pan.
  • 6 Bake at 425 degrees until golden brown (depends on your oven, start with 10-12 minutes).
  • 7 Note: this dough will keep in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.
